Connection Matters Most

Family photos don’t have to feel stiff, overly posed, or like everyone is waiting for the camera to be finished. Some of my favorite family photographs happen in the moments between the “everyone look here” photos. A child laughing as her dad tickles her sides. Sisters wrapped around each other. A little girl running through the field. Parents looking at each other while their children play. Tiny hands holding on. A head peaking over a shoulder.

Those are the moments that tell your family’s story. I always start with the stand and smile image to give everyone a chance to settle in. Then we let the session become more playful and connected. There were cuddles, movement, running, holding, laughing, and plenty of those little in-between moments that cannot be recreated once they are gone. Don't worry if you don't know what to do, I'm here to guide you.

During our session if your little one wants to run, we run. If they want to be held, we capture that. If siblings want to squeeze each other, let them. If dad wants to throw a child in the air, we make room for it. The goal is not perfection. The goal is connection. And that is what I love most about family photography. I’m not looking for a perfectly behaved child or a family that can sit still for an hour. I want to see your family as you actually are.

One day, the chaos that sometimes makes family photos feel difficult will be the very thing you miss. That is why I believe family photography is about more than creating a beautiful gallery. It is about creating a record of this season of your life.

Imagine one of these images printed large enough to see every time you walk through your hallway. A framed photograph of the girls laughing together in their bedroom. A canvas above the sofa. A small album on the coffee table that your children can flip through years from now. Your family deserves to exist in your home.

If you have been putting off family photos because your children are “too wild,” “won’t cooperate,” or “aren’t old enough to sit still,” I want you to know: those things do not scare me. That is where the magic is.
